ever thought about contacting Pelican and seeing if they sell foam? I can't imagine it being very expensive.

Go to homesense, sears, the bay, whatever home store you can find and buy the corrugated mattress foam. I don't know how expensive it is, but I am sure you can fill a briefcase for $5.
No it isn't black/gray and no it isn't 'gun case foam' but it is the same shape and probably mostly similar density. It should do fine if you don't mind the cheapness. |

I've gone on eBay myself and purchased eggshell foam for cheap. You should be able to find some there as well.

Try Home Depot, Home Hardware, or someplace similar.

Awesome, thanks all.
We're looking for something we can cut the pieces out of, in the shape of our guns. Here's an example- minus the foam, of course- In the end, sort of like a large handgun case, that'll fit several mags and accessories too.

Find a text tiles shop and see what diffrent kinds of foam they have there. I got mine from a textiles shop and did custom inserts in my case. I see if I can find the thread where if showed it, if not I just find the pics and post them again.

Old Case with original foam.
New case with foam insert, Well its not new anymore. Foam was purchased from a local text tile retailler in town. I traced outlines of all the items and used a small electric saw to cut out the shapes.

Not sure, but have you got any MICHAELS craft stores around? I've been meaning to check there for some of that foam as well.
I also use 9mm EPP (black) foam sheets for the cutouts of my guns which I lay on top of the softer foam & this provides a very snug fit when the case is closed. I do not cut the soft foam as it is difficult & ends up looking like shit!

However, we're going to try Fabricville later.

How do you cut out the inserts? Do you just cut all the way through the foam or do you leave some left at the bottom to protect the gun? I was thinking about cutting all the way through with a sharp or even heated exacto knife and then taking the block that was cut out and saving off a 1 or 2cm slice of it and glueing that in the bottom of the cut out to protect the bottom of the gun. I've been wanting to do this for a long time, put all my handguns in one briefcase-type case with foam cut outs, but I've never been quite sure how to do the cut outs! Any advice from a pro? =P

The gun case I put the foam insert into already had the pyramid style foam in it, but it was only very thin. However it had a large sheet on the inside that I simply removed when I put in the new piece. I cut all the way through the foam it was the easiest.
If you are starting a new I suggest you buy 3 pieces of foam, 1 thin 1/4 inch piece to line the bottom of whatever case you are using and a second one of whatever width you require that you cut all the way through and finally one more to glue to the top of the case, however this top piece is optional. I used something similar to this to do the cutting.

I get my foam from places like Fannies Fabrics or Fabric Land. I cut it with a hot wire inserted into a soldering iron. With this you can cut the foam to fit the case, and cut out any shapes in the foam to hold whatever equipment you have. Cheap and easy.

I don't think I have a hot wire kicking around for my soldering gun. I'm stuck using a damn sharp blade. Hmm, maybe a carving knife or a my fish gutting knife... and Foam seems to be easy to get a hold of, it's just a matter of who sells it cheapest. Fabric land sells it, any hardware store sells it, hell I've seen it at some dollar stores even for when people are moving! I just need a cheap brief case... I guess I'll check out sears for that. Time to see if I can fit 6 hand guns and one Mac11 into a brief case =P All those years of tetris that my parents told me would never come in handy!
