NICAD OMFG not in faq, need help.
SO i charged my Nicad 9.6 1100mah A cell crane stock battery with my BB bastard NPT charger. Nothing to discharge it with! I know you need to cycle nicad, ive seen the FAQs, how hard is this going to affect my battery? And i assume i cant dryfire until its dead. I dont like to replace gears...

Build a discharger, and there are plans on how to do it already posted.

I built my own discharger with simple Radio Shack products, to much time on my hands at work
2 small lightbulbs, biggest voltage and mah we had there, couple plastic holders, and jumber cables. Dischargers my 9.6 1200mah battery fully in oh say 30-45 mins. Then plug it into my charger and done deal, no wear on the battery, no memory effect to them pesky nicads.

Hook it to a headlight or a fan... I used a siren.... that got annoying!

You don't need to discharge it...in fact it could arguably be worse for it. But I've said this a thousand times...I've never discharged any of my batteries, and never had any problems with them either.

I've had SERIOUS trouble when recharging NiCD before dicharging it. But! Isn't the NPT charger supposed to make it so it doesn't matter whether you recharge it? Either way, I use NiMH. 8) |

From www.hamuniverse.com/batteries.html: "You'll often hear discussions about the so-called 'memory effect' exhibited by NiCad cells. This refers to the claimed tendency of cells not to deliver their rated voltage when placed in a charger before being fully discharged. Belief in the existence of the 'memory effect' is widespread amongst users of NiCad batteries. However, textbooks and data from battery manufacturers make little or no mention of it. Believers say that to prevent it batteries must be discharged to 1 volt per cell before charging. Non-believers say that this discharging merely reduces cell life. Evidence suggests that true 'memory effect' is rare. It was first noticed in communications satellites where cells were discharged to precisely the same discharge point every time. In casual amateur use batteries are most unlikely to be discharged to the same point after every use. Much of what is mistaken for the 'memory effect' is voltage depression, which is caused by long, continuous overcharging, which causes crystals to grow inside the cell. Fortunately both the 'memory effect' and voltage depression can be overcome by subjecting the battery to one or more deep charge/discharge cycles. " And from The Sci.Electronics NiCad battery FAQ (http://www.repairfaq.org/ELE/F_NiCd_...DBATTERY_014): "This does NOT mean that one needs to cycle one's battery each time it is used. This does more harm than good, and unless it is done on a per cell basis, one risks reversing the cells and that really kills them. Perhaps once in a while, use the pack until it is 90% discharged, or to a cell voltage of 1.0V under light load. Here, about 95% of the cells capacity is used, and for all intensive purposes, is discharged. At this point, recharge it properly, and that's it." There are many more out there, from very respected sources, I'm just too lazy to find more than that for now...

I would agree with Spleen.
What I do is really novel. Use my battery till its dead. Then I charge. Oh yeah helps to have two! ;-) Cause if your only 1/2 using your battery and discharging it and recharging you will probably cut the life of your battery in half as well too. |

wait a minute... what if i just not charge it until its dead?

even if you dont disharge, the memory effect you get is very small. its not like if you dont discharge once, your battery is at 1/2. I use NiCad for cordless tolls at my work, and I never discharge. And after 3 years, Id say the battery still runs at atleast 80% of what it did the day we got it.
