I would get in touch with your local community and ask them.
Around here, most people use FRS/GMRS radios. I use a little motorola talkabout radio with a bowman headset. Works great.

I have a motorola talkabout aswell it's a great radio! I got an Iasus throat mic for it but I can't get it to work very well. Ill take a look at the bowman headset. |

edit: Get an UHF type radio.
Motorola talkabout's are useless when there is any distance involved or thick veg/bush in an outdoor game. Contact TechSeller on ASC or goto his site: http://www.technologydirectcanada.com/

You need to get the correct PTT and head-set that connects to it.
Most of the UHF radios use Kenwood two-pin connectors. search: headset & ptt I highly recommend contacting techseller and ask him your specific questions

I have never had any range issues with my talkabouts.
Can UHF radio's communicate with standard FRS/GMRS radios?

You obviously have not been in a large, deep forested area, especially when it start to rain.
And yes - UHF have FRS/GMRS channels Another advantage of UHF radios is the battery life - they will last MUCH longer than talkabouts.
