It doesn't need the tabs to tilt forward.
I don't think it's mechanically possible for the upper to slide BACKWARDS off the lower receiver, no matter what gun it's on... I think something's wrong with your statement.
The tilting/sliding may just be an issue regarding how the receiver mates to the gearbox and has nothing to do with the receiver at all.
If you have no gearbox installed, you *should* be able to break the receiver open with a swinging motion.
