From looking at the kind of things you find at walmart or Canadian Tire, I have to say that you'll have a decent workable airsoft weapon if you replace the complete gear box assembly, battery, wiring, all other internal parts, as well as all external parts. Aka, if you want a decent thing you are likely better off buying a real airsoft from on here.
You might be able to get something with enough work, but unless you have experience in crafting movie props or something, you'll likely wind up with a lump of dung that people will laugh at.
You can try modifying it, but I wouldn't waste my time on it personally. (And you are talking to someone that has made full shirts of maille because he was bored in highschool.)
