You are correct about the motor wire, it contracts when electrical current is applied.
If the power is getting to the claymore then chances are either the motor wire is broken or it might have loosened enough so that it no longer is able to pull the trigger. If the later is the case just open it up and wrap it a bit more tightly around the screw that connects it to the trigger.
If you need new motor wires just email the guys at supercell, they sent me 2 free wires when I broke one of mine.
