By their design Helical gears run quieter than standard gears, it's actually a big selling feature for high speed applications in industry.
The reason your stripping gears like nobodies business is because the metal on the teeth of your piston is superior to that of the metal of your gears. Every mechbox needs a "sacrificial part", most commonly the piston, because it's cheaper to replace a 20$ piston than a 100$ set of gears. Now the reason you were stripping the piston probably has to do with the angel silent head set..
