If you DO go with the M4 get the TM M4 S-System, it's infinitely more solid than the regular TM M4A1. Zero barrel wobble on the S-System because the rail reinforces everything, the gun is nearly bomb proof except the tabs and plastic stock.

The JG M4 S-system is a great gun too but you might wanna take her down right away and re-lube/re-shim the gears. They tend to do a lame job at the factory. After thet they shoot hard at 370-400FPS and they come with Classic Army hardened steel gears in a TM clone gearbox and they are VERY heavy/solid.

If you wanna go AK there really isn't anything wrong with them except that some of them have a loose front sight and some issues with the screws on the stock and fire selector switch coming lose. all easily fixed. You may wanna upgrade the gun too because I know I hate the feel of a light/plastic AK. In wich case it gets expensive, concider building a franken AK if you are familiar with how they are assembled. check my thread "Better AK than TM for less than $600" under the same area as this post.

any one of these 3 is a great choice for a first gun. Even the JG if you know someone that wants to work on the gearbox for an hour for you.
