Academy has been around for quite a while, I don't know how long but they were the first to make the L85A1, if I'm correct. From reviews I read it was a crappy gun and needed alot of upgrading and wasn't cost effective due to the updgrades that it needed to be skirmishable. As ThePhenom said if you look at what Academy did with the L85a1 chances are that the m4 will be crapy too. Your better with a TM to start with than an Academy.
But barefoot if you absolutely want a M4a1as your main gun you can go wrong with the TM one, since it is easily upgradeable and fixable. There is also ICS that make a good one, a bit more expensive but it is full metal. Try to find some reviews on those. Still it depends on the money you can/want to spend as a first gun.
