On my M3 I put Glued (I used what is called "Proseal" in the helicopter industry) the steel rail from an old TM M4 onto the top of the receiver. Its almost a perfect fit for length. I also put a 40 mm red dot on top of that. THe problem with trying to tap into the receiver to mount anything is that the mechbox inside fits so snugly and the receiver is pretty thin (not much material for threads) that it would break (or crack) pretty easily.
