The 2" straps are only velcro backed on the bottom, but they're surprisingly comfortable for being unpadded. Most of the weight on the carrier (which is just about nothing) is taken up on the snug fit to your torso, so there's not much weight on your shoulders at all.
I only put ferro shoulderpads on mine to have some place to route cables.
