Take a trip to Canadian Tire and pick up the $8 Hoppes cleaning kit (making sure it's go the .22cal tip in it), and a $2 pacakge of .22cal cloth patches (200 count). Fold a patch in three, slide it into the plastic tip, use a drop of silicon oil and you're all set. Why screw around with making a custom cleaning rod when you can spend $10 and have a good one!

And don't worry about how far though. When you clean the barrel, use your fingers to twist & lower the rod into the barrel until it stops at the bottom, then twist & raise it and out. Make sure you turn the hop up full off first, but the tip of the rod won't damage anything in the gun unless you ram it into the barrel like you're loading a flintlock musket.
