Mine works just fine outside. Very mobile and maneuverable (found that especially handy in large groups of close trees), and I haven't had any real trouble hitting targets at engagement range. Most areas on the field aren't huge distances mind you, but it's been way more than sufficient so far.
As VooDoo said, if he wants an MP5, go for an MP5. I've no doubt he can make it work for him.
