I never liked the gemtech kind. Some weaves of the dense fibres gets into the trajectory of the BB. If you look though the barrel opening of the silencer, you'll see what I mean.
Nonetheless I always take out the fibres one by one and burn away the annoying extra weaves, works well. But you are right, these kinds do help lessen the audible piston smack compared to the regular foam kind.
