On a Hicapa...orient it so the muzzle is pointing away from you and you're looking at the back of the grip. The grip safety is supposed to prevent the trigger from being pulled...you can test this by getting a fingernail under the bottom edge of the grip safety and keep it pulled out (in "safe" position), while you put pressure on the trigger. Keep in mind that you're not working with steel parts...so if you go Hulk on it, you'll break something. But...it should provide more than enough normal blocking force. If that works...then you know the parts are working.
Then try again without holding the grip safety out...if the hammer is tripped, then it means that the safety isn't being pushed out (by spring pressure) enough.
There's a 3-fingered leaf spring on the back side of the grip, under the beavertail safety. Oriented like I described, it's the far left finger that puts pressure on the beaver tail to keep it out. It's the shortest of the three fingers and has a rounded bent end.
If you bend this one out (towards the rear of the pistol) a bit more...not extreme though...it'll put more pressure on the grip safety. There's lots of other write-ups of how to get into it...so it might be best to reference some of those...but here's the short desc:
1. Mag out
2. Remove the slide (rack partially back, push out slide catch, slide the assembly right off the front)
3. Push out pin by the bottom of the grip by the lanyard hole (this holds the mainspring housing in place)
4. Once the mainspring housing/main spring is out, you might be able to get the leaf spring out....but the beaver tail will be covering up stuff so it might be awkward. If you can get it out and get it back in right....skip the rest of this.
5. Rotate the thumb safety up and a bit past where it normally would go...pull it out of the frame (watch out for the plunger and spring...they pop right out and fly off into oblivion). On a 5.1 you'd take out the right side thumb safety as well.
6. Remove the grip safety...it should just come straight out
7. Remove leaf spring
Replace in the following order:
1. postition leaf spring...the fingers just lay on top of all the ramps and stuff in there...the fingers do NOT go under anything.
2. position grip safety
3. push the thumb safety plunger/spring in, position thumb safety...when you've got it, just push the safety in and then rotate it back into position
4. replace mainspring unit...make sure the mainspring bar is on the plunger of the housing.
5. replace pin
Test.
Also...check that your grip is on properly to your frame. The other week a guy brought in his pistol with the grip safety not working...turned out his frame/grip was loose. Drop the hammer on your pistol...it's easier to do this if it's not cocked. Loosen the two side grip screws and loosen the trigger guard screw inside the frame (it goes straight down into the front part of the trigger guard). Then hold/press the grip and frame together...tighten the two grip screws (again, tight but don't go Hulk on it)...then snug up the frame screw that goes into the trigger guard. There should be no seam between the grip and the frame (easy to spot around the back side by the beaver tail safety).
If that doesn't work...you could try swapping grip safeties...but it's probably not worth the cost unless it really bugs you.
