It's not the rear sight that's out of place, it's the front sight. I made that comment not as an issue on the classification type of the weapon, but as a general gunsmithing/installation note. The further apart open sights are (from front to rear), the more accuracy the shooter is able to achieve. Therefore, the shooter should always be spacing them out as far as possible along the rails. Besides... I've never seen a factory built KAC weapon with the front sight anywhere but as far as possible on the front of the weapon. Take a look at the SR-15, SR-25, and the new PDW.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were a case of movie magic, as there are plenty of cinematic continuity errors when it comes to technical details like this (and even stupider ones, like backwards Aimpoints), but I find that The Unit is generally fairly accurate.
Here's a good catalogue of all the weapons used in the series:

If the rail system were completely enclosed and made from heat sensitive materials, then yes, it's possible. However, that's the reason why rails are made from aluminum, don't touch the outer barrel, and are swiss cheesed with all those holes - it's all to allow proper ventilation and minimize heat build up through managed energy dissipation.
Heat can also definitely transfer through the hand guard (it acts as a big heatsink), which is why shooters attach synthetic rail covers or ladders to the areas that they'll grip, so that heat does not transfer through those areas.

Yes, been considering it, but haven't had the time/opportunity to do it. I do have a short M203 here... I'll try it when I get a chance.
