In the mechbox.com explained how to time the gears. The gear they say you time has the notch on it to catch the tappet plate. I imagine you would do this so the notch is already against the tappet after assembly to avoid any unnecessary damage to the tappet plate from the gear spinning at full speed before connecting with it.
