Worklog: Projeckt RPG-2

So the yearly namsim game is coming up here in Ontario. I've decided to play on the VC faction, and figured something special was needed.

This is the worklog for my custom RPG-2 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RPG-2 ) build. Pictures and updates as work progresses.

Early fab of a TBG-7V Thermobaric round;

This will be shortened down once I have a final depth for the working bits of the tube.

Launcher tube complete;

Started working on the sights;

Front sight shroud. I picked 22ga rolled sheet steel as my material. It's easy to cut w/ tinsnips and of course takes a gorgeous blued finish. Both front and rear sights will be constructed entirely of steel.

------------------------------------------

Finished the rear sight shroud today, as well picked up materials so I can finish and mount the sights (hopefully tomorrow, ran out of daylight today).

Although the 22ga sheet steel is pretty robust, I was worrying about them getting beaten up severely. So already having a blowtorch I decided to quench the finished pieces to harden the steel;

http://i37.tinypic.com/nyxq4o.jpg

1. Heating the pieces on a 1" steel square rod, then hammering them out to get nice right angles.

2. Blasting the shit out of them till they glowed a nice red hot

3. Quenching in a tin can I found (really, it was in the middle of the floor of my common room, already clean!)

4. After rebluing, each part is much more resistant to being deformed, and the bends hold there angle much better against pressure.

I left all the tool marks etc on the parts, as I felt it made them look more "made in china". This is supposed to be a chinese made RPG-2 btw.

Sighting system complete!

Sights in closed position;

Sights in open position;

Went and bought 4x 12"x12" sheets of 1/8" aluminum, so now I can get started on the trigger unit!

So after quite a bit of procrastinating I've finally gotten to the trigger/grip assembly;

This is the first piece, going to be used as a template to make others. 1/8" aluminum, cut with a jigsaw rough and then filed down to the exact dimensions.

I'm thinking I'll just rough cut the rest, drill and rivet them all together then file them down to spec as one piece.

A modified airbomb grenade, the ignition system is electric. Just a single stage charge, although when I get back next season I would love to develop a two stage round that would launch a grenade and have it explode downrange. Although safety considerations come into play with that.

Kos-Mos August 6th, 2008 21:17

You could use a "A" class single stage rocket for models.

They give roughtly 1N of push, and exist in 0-1-3-5 seconds delay before the chute detonation (that can be used here to slip the round in half and simulate a detonation.

electric ignition.

Some more progress;

http://i38.tinypic.com/n1qdmf.jpg

I'm starting to come under the gun deadline wise, so I decided to go with an aluminum frame and plasticard for the filler panels in the grip. Don't worry, the handgrips will still be wood!

Rough cut all the panels, and filed the second aluminum part down to spec, as well as one plasticard panel.

Also managed to source some pvc piping that was a better match diameter wise to the realsteel, so cut the heatshield out of my old tube and slide it over the new one, looks bang on now.

Kos you seriously have me thinking about those rocket motors, they come with their own ignitors too!

Im afraid every year someone comes up with a new and interesting pyrotechnic device.... and it just escalates every year. I would not be surprised if we just started using live ordinance in 5 years time.
