Painting.
 

So i'm in need of a little info in regards to painting guns. I am an automotive painter so i know all the steps in the painting process however i have never painted a gun. I'll be using Krylon bombs as i have on a number of car dashboards and i have been quite happy with the quality it puts out.

So to those that have experience, my question(s) is this: what steps did you take in the preperation for painting? Sand and prime? or just adhesion promoter? Did prep modes for metal to plastics?

I'll be painting my teamates complete full metal G&P M4. I appreciate the assisstance.

Everyone has diffrent experiences painting.

Personally, I never sand, always prime and let coats dry for 8+ hours between applications.

No Prime needed in most cases. Just sanding if it's Krylon.

There's some that you may need to rough up a bit more than normal, but a fine grit sanding should get it done enough for the paint to stick.

If you're an automotive painter, you could pick up some DuraCoat professional level gun paint ( http://www.lauerweaponry.com ), use an HLVP and spray your guns with whatever colour you want from them. Or use a camo pattern kit. Then bake it in your shop (if'n you got that kind of access). It'll be super primo.

Yah i got guns, booth and such. I assumed as much just a 400 buzz should let it bite into it pretty good. I've never primed any of my krylon applications but it seems to adhere quite nicely on its own.

Well, if you've got the set up, then I highly recommend starting a DuraCoat operation. The stuff is amazing. I've seen it on real steel and it is some really nice finishing. Plus, it works awesomely on metal bodies for airsoft. Actually makes the pain stand up to much more abuse, like that of real guns instead of the rinky dink powder coat they toss on most of the bodies.

The paint is cheap enough. Cover about 4 guns for $28~ total.

You make a good point their friend, it probably wouldn't hurt to go with that line of product. I appreciate it.

Just use lighter colors first if you're doing camo.

You might need stencils for CADPAT and whatnot.

Just have fun, and it's always re-paintable. You probably know more about this than me, but use a "sweeping" motion from left to right. Don't over-apply. And with Krylon always apply thin layers.

HEy all, sorry for necro but it's a question related to DuraCoat and painting and search brought me to this thread;

I wanna paint my stock in a Dark Earth color, I know DuraCoat has Magpul Flat Dark Earth but I just don't know if it's easy to apply.

My other question is, would Krylon Camo in Brown or Khaki match properly with a Magpul Dark Earth grip??

Bad part is that I would need a spray paint gun..... :( Spending that much for a butt, stock...not sure
