Painting & The Colour Matching Challenge

Painting & The Colour Matching Challenge

I don't recall seeing anything posted about this before - if it has - o well.

Recently I decided I was going to move away from the typical OD / Black look and lean more to the coyote brown / black look. But I wanted all my accessories the same or as close to the same colour as my primary accessory (Coyote Brown Magpul M93b stock)

Well after searching high and low I came to the conclusion that matching this colour was going to be a challenge. So I went to home depot and had then scan in a Coyote Brown magpul in the colour match. He was dead set on giving me an oil finish can of paint and told me they had an aerosol solution that would allow me to spray it on or said I should paint it with a brush... (despite knowing that it was going to look like ass, I did it anyways) - got home and sure as shit - a test paint on plastic proved it was a waste of money.

So I got the idea to call a few body repair shops who I figure got to know something about matching paint.... After 2 calls, I was given the name of one company who not only match's the colour but will put it in a spray can for you. Score.... $27 for the first can - and not sure how much after they have the right colour codes... (expensive sure! but hell its only a few days of Tim Horton's coffees....)

None the less - I picked up my can last night and did a little painting. Thought I would share it with you guys. **note it is a very flat finish - I had a lot of light on it and I still forgot to turn off the flash..lol - and bah its freash paint.

So anyone who is interested in painting accessories or their aeg a specific colour may want to give a few auto body shops a call....

very nice, that happens to be the biggest problem I've come across in matching paints for different patterns so it'll actually match the bdu's.

Thanx for the great tip, I'll have to start looking around for someone who can do the same.

Any chance you can mention the company you found locally that does this service?

I like the colour match, looks much closer then the tan from Krylon that I get from Crappy Tire, gonna have to see if anyone out this way offers that service. If not, I'll have to look at ordering from out your way if you can find the company info

Look up Sherwin-Williams.. http://www.sherwin-williams.com

They should be able to provide colour matching services and supply the paint in a spray can.

TFZ-OZ June 7th, 2006 13:23

Lol thanks Jugglez - that IS the place I took it to....

Jugglez June 7th, 2006 13:24

hahah I knew it. They're very popular among the car tuners, they could colour match even the rarest custom paint jobs to a tee.

Thanx alot Oz, Jugglez, I was a little pesimistic but turns out they got a retail location right in Sudbury so that's a bonus.
I'll definetly check them out nd see if I can still get the right matches for the patterns I got stuck on due to no matching paints anywhere else.

Cheers.

they ask for something to scan I guess - myself - I used the paint I got scanned in from home depot. If anyone wants the colour numbers for that colour I used Magpul "coyote brown" let me know.

Absolutely. That actually looks very good.

I must say, it's dead on to the colour of your magpul. Nice job!
