Canadian Tire Silicon Lube OK for Airsoft Gun?
 

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to know if the Canadiantire Silicon Lube is ok for AEG maintenance and lubercation:

I have this one readily on hand, so wanted to know if I can use it, or do I HAVE TO buy a silicon lube that is designed for Airsoft guns.

It probably contains some nasty distillates. As far as I know you need to get one that is pure silicon lube that is food grade. I just picked some up from Airsoftparts.ca. That other stuff will damage plastics and so forth.

I asked my car club's amsoil sponsor rep about this product... he checked into it for me, this product also contains petroleum distillates. Though I'm not certain if he's right about it or not, seeing that there's a 'ok with incidental contact with food' thing on there... Define 'incidental' lol.


I use un propelled silicone oil used for wheel bearings in RC cars. Comes in a squeeze tube with a little needle to apply. I use it to oil mags and slide on my pistol. No issues there. Also since I oil the parts on the gun directly, I oiled the mags before winter and then dumped the oiled gas in the spring, no need to shoot that through the hopup when I'm oiling the blowback unit by hand.

I used it in the past until I realized their's petroleum distillate in it. It's great for metal, bad for all the rubber parts.

So the Cdntire Silicon spray is a definite NO...
Is the Multi-purpose Grease that Aper suggested from Cdntire good to use?

In general, should i be using a silicon oil/spray or some type of grease? Apologies if this is a rather dumb question.

For just lubing your barrel/magazines etc, the lightweight silicon oil/spray is good. The grease is more for gas guns that have large moving parts like pistol slides or GBBR bolts.

yes the grease will be fine for your internals, just use it sparingly. If you overgrease, it can come out the nozzle and end up on your hopup bucking. which just means your hopup will not work until the grease is completely expended off the rubber... but that could take a while.

I've eyed the treadmill belt lube many times while roaming around ct. It might be good oil for gbb. Anyone try it?

I use Permatec dialectric grease inside gearboxes,it is thick and gives a good airseal without flying out the nozzle.
I use white lithium of the same brand for gears.

GBB: You have to use a little bit of silicon oil/spray in GBB mags to keep the seals wet (see propane tank adaptor), when they dry they shrink. Which means the gas will leak out. When you fire your gbb the sillicone will lube some of the parts in your gbb. Use a good grease for the rest of the moving parts. Don't put any grease/silicone into the inner barrel unless your cleaning it (twice a year?), it will affect your bb's by sticking to them and they will fly all over the place.

AEG: Use a little bit of silicon oil in your mags once in a while, not much, just so it slides easily and help push the bb's up into the hopup. Cleaning your AEG to often will lead to problems. Don't put any grease/silicone into the inner barrel unless your cleaning it (twice a year?), it will affect your bb's by sticking to them and they will fly all over the place.

An airsoft is not a firearm. AEG have a lot in common with a drill. You dont do a lot of maintenant on a drill. GBB's are more like compressors, you need a little bit of maintenance.

The only silicone oil you should be using is either "airsoft" silicone oil or 100% silicone RC shock oil. Accept no substitutes.
