High relief trademarks?
 

Does anyone know if its possible to engrave high relief trademarks into an aluminum body.

you can't change engraved markings into relief markings. they have to be done either during casting or they need to be pressed onto the surface. basically pressed into a dye that has the marking engraved. since that would take a multy-ton press, it can not be done on an already formed receiver. the marking are usually put on before the receiver is folded into it's final shape, like when the sheet of steel is being stamp cut, it adds the markings then.

With patience you could make them. Would not be out of metal or stamped

After talking with an expert, I actually discovered that the trades are actually made in low relief :S
That picture is very miss leading.

Anyway, any recomendations on how should I cover the original trades for the re engraving?

the only way i can see this done being that you can't really add aluminum back on, is to sand blast the whole receiver, and slap on some JBweld to thicken the area you want engraved. then you would have to find a way of clamping the receiver down, making sure that it is perpendicular to the table of the engraving machine (a CNC Mill). once the milling is done, powder coat and enjoy.

You'd be better off buying a new lower which is already blank

wouldn't make too much difference. the relief markings are raised, so you still need to add material.

going by his pictures, the first pic is done using "letter punch". it's not really engraving as material isn't removed, just compacted.
the second pic is not high/low relief engraving, it's dye press formed (the lettering is already on the surface of the dye as a negative and pressed onto the material during forming).
if he wants to do something in low relief, he just needs to fill in the old engraving with a metal epoxy. of course he would have to sand blast the area and clear it of paint before doing so. since the receiver would be painter afterwards, the slightly different color of the epoxy wouldn't really matter.

I realize that. I read the thread. The ops last question though was how to cover it up so he can re-engrave.

Not sure if there's an easy way. A blank would be a better place to start?
