MAGPUL MASADA question

Hello fellow airsofters. I was wondering if anybody has a magpul masada riffle, I was planning on getting one soon and just wanted to know from other airsofters opinion toward this gun any problems or such issues towards it. thanks:)

mr_nuts31 August 4th, 2011 10:23

which one, the magpul pts one or the a&k?

Scouser August 4th, 2011 10:51

one of my teammates has the pts one, and 3 others on the team (including myself) have the a&k one

personally id go with the a&k masada instead, less proprietary parts and a few inconsistencies (it was based on early production photos of the original masada design)

the plastic on the body is surprisingly durable, the upper reciever is still metal

and the money you save you can spend on upgrading it internally to shoot better than the PTS version does stock

a guntech i talked to about it when i was doing my research into which one to buy put it this way, if you want something pretty to be a display gun, get the PTS, if you want something to make into your primary weapon, get the a&k

As a matter of interest

Canadian Firearms Program just issued the Firearms Registry Table Number for the Civilian version of the Bushmaster ACR ( which is what the Masada became )

so you can now ow a RS version of this firearm... and comes in Unrestricted barrel length!! $3300 yay!

I have the pts. its a pretty solid rifle.

Are you coming to the WARDENS scrim this weekend?

we have 4 a&k and 1 magpul masada on the team.

I have PTS and I am very satisfied.

Yeah, I wished they would have kept it in house, but I guess they weren't ready to get into the whole logistics of manufacturing firearms. I haven't shot one yet, but got my hands on one at a gunshow, and I wasn't too overly impressed. The first time I saw the Masada on an episode of Future Weapons and thought the overall conceptual design was sound, take the guts from an M4/M16, turn it into a modern reliable lightweight weapon system that was ambidexterious, used composite/polymers, and was relatively low cost.

‪Future Weapons: Magpul Masada (Bushmaster ACR / Remington ACR)‬‏ - YouTube

Ironically for combat tubberware the Masada/ACR is heavier than the M4/M16. I like how the gun was design around M4/M16 parts, like the trigger group and barrel, and though the ability to quick detach the barrel is innovative from what I have read it doesn't hold zero after removing and remounting. Not to mention the MSRP is near triple of what Magpul originally wanted to offer it at. Thus I feel the end product ultimately did not meet the original design criterion. Then again I haven't had a chance to put some lead down the pipe, but those are some of my thoughts on the weapon system. I wished we had unrestricted barrel lengths, because state side we got to register and pay a $200 tax stamp for any SBR/SBS or any other NFA item.

It's a very nice gun but with lots of propriety parts that when it breaks is a pain in the ass to find a replacement.
I broke the hop up adjustor (B25) making my gun unusable although I found a place for getting the parts. Hopefully one of the retailers here will be a able to get it for me.
PM or call me for other info.

if you plan on using it with a fire control computer/MOSFET, go with the A&K. the PTS version uses a different switch than normal AEGs, and this switch does not keep contact during operation on low voltage trigger wire setups. the switch likes to jump around, so it needs normal switch gap arching to stick and maintain it's connection. i have been working on my team mates PTS ACR for the last few months to try and make it run accurately and dependably on a MOSFET set up. also the internals of the PTS has been some of the worst i have worked with. externally it's a beautiful gun, it's a shame that PTS contracted the internals over to Ares...

I've always wondered how it would be like to install a MOSFET on an ARES made gun. Are there any other sort of difficulties one might encounter with the ARES designed switches?

their switches simply suck for use in anything that will be inducing shock or vibration on it. i had to do some crazy mods to the inside of the gearbox to get a v2 switch assembly to fit yet alone work. so my buddies ACR now runs at 398FPS +- 2FPS with a MOSFET on a V2 switch with Lipo batteries. the only thing that no longer works is the mechanical safety. im working out a solution to have the safety work again.
Ares quality control is laughable. when i first got the ACR and took it apart, i found a shit ton of metal filings covering everything inside the gearbox and even inside the barrel. after a good degreasing i found some very distressing signs. the filings that covered everything had come from the cylinder wall. the cause was the piston's metal tooth that was scraping along the inside of the cylinder, as it was 0.3mm larger then not only the rest of the teeth on the piston, but also generally larger than standard metal teeth from other manufactures.
the gears were a nightmare.. the sector gear was over sized and wedging the piston body against the top of the gearbox, and the spur gear was warped like an old vinyl record.
the casting of the holes for the bearings was a joke.. the recess for the bearing shoulders were so shallow that i could not shim the new gears. i had to run it on my mill and redo the recess.

i really should make a list of all the mods i had to do to this horrible gearbox. oh well. when i first got the gun, it would hick-up while firing and would sometimes just completely cease up. now it has the quietest gearbox i have ever heard.

Any clue about the Remminton version that was "un magpulerized'? Would thats have been put on the FRT too?

That is just the MINI version of the rant... for what i spent on this gun, its cheaper in the long run to get a Systema PTW... however, after a bunch of quality replacement parts, Dynamo made the thing sing, with a lot of modification and over the course of a few months.

They even cheaped out on the anodizing, using only level 1, where most Chinese knockoffs use level 2... used pot metal in important joint locations. Cheap internals as Dynamo pointed out... The list literally goes on.

I even emailed Magpul PTS in China about the parts that came broken out of the box; and after a few emails exchanged, loads of pics taken of problem parts, huge writeup of problems, eventually they forwarded me to one of their distributors in the states... after a few weeks they finally responded, asked a few questions, i replied and never heard from them again. I'd forward the case to Magpul directly, and even with Dynamo, write up a "review" but frankly neither of us have the patience anymore.

To sum it all up, utter disappointment, especially just out of the box, from a company i thought was from someone reliable... maybe for their real steel counterparts its different (i'll find out soon enough though). It is just airsoft, but its not cheap.

But hey, after all the work he put into it, its one of the nicest running guns ive heard (and its still not 100% finished); just dont ask how he got it done. Field testing coming soon...

PrIeSt August 4th, 2011 23:05

looks like we need a machinest to start making quality replacement internals for it than? :)

I look forward to buying parts. lol
