MadBull 9.6v LiFePO4 battery
 

Hi all,
i left my battery plugged into the charger but the charger itself was not plugged into the wall socket. the battery is now bloated.
is the battery safe to use? or should i worried that it might explode in my bedroom...

Im not sure LifePo is the same as normal LIpos but bloated=bad

I would ditch it

throw it out. Now. preferably somewhere outside. on something not flammable.

LiFePO4 batteries are supposed to be safe. Not to confuse with Li-Po batteries.

Although LFPs are supposed to have high abuse tolerance, they can still bulge. That bulging is caused when you overchange and hydrogen gas is produced. If you don't know already, Hydrogen is VERY combustible. Be careful when disposing.

what?! but its brand new! i had it plugged into the proprietary charger unit but the charger was NOT plugged into the wall socket... so it shouldn't have been overcharged... is it possible for the same to happen if i over-DIScharge it? because i can see that happening since it was left plugged into the charger... overnight... (not plugged into the wall)

Oh, didn't read that properly. If it wasn't plugged into the wall, it shouldn't have discharged. And yes, this can happen during overdischarge. I'm not too sure what happened. Exactly how "bloated" is it? Do you have pictures?

TBH, I'm new to the airsoft scene, however, I know my batteries. :P And you never want to overdischarge or overcharge any Lithium batteries. Imagine in a Lithium battery, the carbon (most common) anode is a sponge (or a crystalline lattice). You fill that sponge with Li ions and it expands and shrinks when you use it. But when you overfill it, the bonds between the atoms become way too far apart, thus permanently weakening the structure. Also, when you overdischarge it, since the sponge has already expanded to accompany the Li ions, when you take out all of these ions, the structure will collapse, thus dropping capacity drastically.

Again, I'm not sure what happened. Physically, they're very abuse tolerant.

can in, any bloating whatsoever in any battery with lithium in it is bad. using that would be like flying a plane that's 90% rust, accident waiting to happen.

One of my Intellect LifePO's was left plugged in. I don't see bulging per se but the wrapping around it seems looser than before. Is this the bulging people are noticing or would it be the actual battery that bulges?

When they are damaged and bulging happens if feels like an air pocket and is very noticeable

yeah, it feels like an air pocket between the battery and the shrink wrapped outer. I guess puffy is a better word but it isn't the actual battery that is bulging.

btw, just put a tester onto it and I'm getting 2.5v

yea puffy is a better word, if I have a battery that does that I stop using them
