Red/Green Dot Scope vs. Holographic Sight (ex. 552)
 

I was wondering which is a better mod, the red dot scope or the holographic sight? I want to know which one has a better field of sight as well as what are there plus and minus acording to you ladies and gents. I have heard that with the scope you have to close one eye and with the sight you dont. As well as some scopes magnify and the sights dont.

Do you really need the magification?

Which one is more reliable?

Ect...

Real steel or Airsoft copies? Holograpgic sights are generally more expensive than red dot sights, usually in the $300+ range (used), whereas you can find red dot sights, for around $40+.

I have both and like both. The holo-sights seem to have a bigger "window" than a red dot but that only really comes into play with the real deal.

For a red dot the Aimpoint T-1 Micro is pretty nice and Huang either has them or can get them.

For Holosights the nicest clone is a Hurricane. There are real 511s and the like floating around, the civi versions.

If you're on a budget I think you may have more choices in red-dot-land.

I don't care for magnification myself, but would like to try a nice S&B short dot type site just to see if that type is OK.

holosights have a bigger window? I cant really tell with the pictures, oh and is it true you dont have to close one eye to use the holo-sights?

the holosights are the way i originally wanted to go but then i saw some 45mm red dot scopes that have 2x magnification and thought to my self hmmmmm that might come in handy and considering the pictures of the holo sights didnt look like they had a 45mm window i got confused.

basically i am afraid of getting the wrong thing and wasting my money. i am after a red dot that is going to give me the best view and accuracy whether its a scope or holo.

It depend on the aplication and your need.
If you are to engage target at close range, you need no magnification and a fast sight. So a red-dot or hollowsight will allow you fast target aquisition with both eyes open and help you aquire your dot easely even if you are shooting reaction side.

You will need a scope if you are playing a lot outside where your target will be beyond 200fts and you need to ID them trough brands and leafs. You will typically use less than 3x of magnification power for an assault carbine and 3x and up for a sniper rifle.

If you want usability over look, keep that in mind. If you just want a kick ass tacticool look, than shoose watherver devise you think look good.

Usability will cost you more, because you will buy something that actually work decently.

Look will cost you less, because it won't work as good, but will only look good. Especially true with rifle scopes. Cheap replica are worthless optic wise.

It's a good thing you're doing your research. It'll probably be trial and error as you go. The replica holosights are glorified red dots and have a tendency to be hard to see in bright light, same goes for some red dots. As far as replica's go, get what you think looks good and go from there. Or try out other peoples.

Magnification is nice at times but definitely not necessary.

Just FYI, by definition "scopes" have magnification wheras "sights" or "red dots sights" have no magnification.

hmmm, what a decision, i plan on doing a far share of both indoor and outdoor play, i have a m4 sir so i dont need crazy magnification. I like the two eyes easy target acquisition with the holosight. but like the 2x magnification of the red dot scope. I may have to get both and interchange according to tacticle situation.

The "glass" of a holosight like an EOTech is about twice the size of the lens of a typical red dot. If your batteries die then it's a lot easier to pick up your irons through one. I'll use both with both my eyes open. I only shut one eye when using a magnifing sight or scope.

Ideally if your not dealing with any magnification you should have both eyes open.

This can easily turn into the Eotech vs Aimpoint debate, but let me share my experience with both sights on real and airsoft.

For airsoft accuracy is going to be far less than real steal, but at close ranges (withing AEG distance) its not a huge deal. This is why I prefer the Eotech. I like the 45 MOA circle around the dot to allow quicker target aquisition.

The Aimpoint has a much better life span (again the real deal)

If you dont need any NV settings you should be able to find one for 300ish, but it will be a bit of a hunt.

Both of these units can come with a flip down 4X magnification so you get the best of both worlds. But just like Danke said, its much easier to co witness your irons with the Eotech.

if your buying a real one I would highly suggest it!

I'd say a lens shield is a great idea. Bruce on here make super nice ones.

I just cant stand the look of the eotech, but King Arms makes a REALLY nice reflex sight (http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/king-arms...dot-sight.html), used it on my UMP all the time, worked great
But I prefer the aimpoint on my M4, looks nicer lol

I will admit, the new mini aimpoints are pretty slick.

if you want to buy a real holo sight, get a bushnell. Its cheaper than the EOtechs. Personally, i would just get a RDS as they are cheaper and easily replaced if broken/lost.
