Advertising Airsoft

From what ive read and hear on ASC most Canadians have no idea what airsoft really is. It seems to me that most people think that our airsoft guns are pellet guns that use metal BB's to kill or maim people.

What im asking is if anyone has some time/money to advertise on TV or try to get someone to do a story on airsoft in a newspaper about what airsoft is really about. This would make the public aware of what we are doing and how airsoft fields have mercy rules and rules about wearing protective gear (eyewear). Also this could possibly bring more people to the sport and make airsoft a more popular sport in Canada.

It's bacon time!

The Saint November 2nd, 2008 23:37

Err.... No. That really makes no sense. Getting all up into the rest of Canada's face won't do us any good. TV ads aren't really useful to promote acceptance of something that's inherently not photogenic.

If people want to throw their money away, throw some my way instead.

SXKilla November 2nd, 2008 23:38

well i guess i didnt really think that through

yay my first fail thread

WTF? anybody on ASC that thinks airsoft guns are metal BB guns used to maim or kill people usually get learned right quick in the form of a reality check or a flame! i mean cmon now get real!

took to long to type before realizing this FAILS!

Astros November 2nd, 2008 23:41

i think what he was talking is the general population in Canada, not the people who go on ASC

FOX_111 November 2nd, 2008 23:43

I don't want that many people to know about airsoft.
Paintball is there for them.

Airsoft is ment to be underground because the mass don't usually adhere to what milsim is.

Not really, milsim doesn't enter into this equation at all. TV ads for airsoft retailers are nothing new for countries where airsoft is fully legalized. For us? Make little to no sense.

Winnipeg Free Press came out and did a fair view of ower sport with ower team and another, last year I belive. It was on Sat. Oct 6th 2007 that they ran it on.She played with us and she had another guy doing photo's. I thought it all went well and seem to be fair.It was a short story, but eh! Alot of guys were on the fence at the time as well, but it worked out :)

I wasnt talking about TV ads for airsoft retailers. I was talking about informing the general public about airsoft

Yes, I know that, that's why I shot you down.

I'm shooting down Fox's assertion that airsoft could ever only be underground for some milsim-reason.

do you have a link to the article?

Crunchmeister November 2nd, 2008 23:58

I think that airsoft is just fine semi-underground as it is. It's still a pretty exclusive sport because the guns are so hard to get. However, I think that with the arrival of the more affordable high quality legal clear guns, more people will get involved in the sport. However, there's also a down side that rather than having really a sport of true enthusiasts, there will be a lot of ignorant noobs from the general public.

Many noobs now getting into the sport are ASC members before playing, and get their guns through here. They know something about the game, gear, etiquette and such before actually getting out there. While they're still noobs to the actual gameplay, at least they get to learn a lot beforehand. Having more public players means that a significantly lower number of noobs without an ASC background will be getting involved.

And there are many, many other issues with that I'm sure others will be more than happy to post about...

mcguyver November 3rd, 2008 00:00

If there is a TV ad, I'll volunteer to wear the Speedo.

Wait, what are we talking about here?

L473ncy November 3rd, 2008 00:01

No.... Just no...

If anything it will mobilize the soccer moms and get them to lobby for airsoft being banned.

Plus it will also introduce a lot of unsavoury people.

Someone told me once that in their university dorms some guys bought glass BB's (that's right GLASS) and were shooting them from clearsoft from CT. They were shattering.... and I would not want to get hit with one of those even if it's low velocity.

Seriously I think we need to make a slow transition, don't need to disturb the equilibrium, just do it slowly much like a buffer equilibrium.

@ Crunch: Thats why we were discussing private invite only games in the AV general section.

Death March November 3rd, 2008 00:08

No Astros, but that is the date it was printed on! I have the paper copy :) The webpage is winnipegfreepress.com and it was Carolyn Vesely that did the story. It was in the "detour" section for pop culture and other stuff. Hope that helps some. When I have some free time I'll try and track down the link :)

FOX_111 November 3rd, 2008 00:43

For those who want airsoft out in the open. Look how it is in the US. If you want a 12yo kid running allong with you in a game...

I don't want it to be in the open. Not for the legal part of the deal, but for what airsoft is.

The bulk of the milsimmers are paintballers that got bored of waisting paint in the wood with BMX guys. The other part are collectors that want to recreate and use their collection and the rest are people that like to play army.

If airsoft is open to all, you'll get all the wankers that can afford a gun to try to join in and mess up what's in place. We can barely weed out the one that found out about airsoft on their own.

IMO, there is not enough money to do in airsoft to warrant such publicity anyway. As long as shipments of guns are unreliable and low quality for the most part.

L473ncy November 3rd, 2008 09:25

Where wold we air it anyways? History? PBS? CBC? Global?

How about QVC? We can shoot two birds with one stone :D . (If anyone saw the SNL skit you'll get this)

worst idea ever, wtf?

FOX_111 November 3rd, 2008 10:09

A few years ago, we where organising a super large milsim in a old cold war erea radar bunker on top of a mountain. The place was super kick ass, we had a lot of stuff to fill the bunker with (giant screens, computers, alarms...)

The project shut down for 2 reasons. 1 is being that the owners where not respecting what was in the contract (there was a contract, because that thing was so huge) and 2, the players here where doing a mega shitfest about the fact that the milsim had slipped to the public eye on tv. A tv host is the friend of one of the organisers, and he talked about the milsim on live TV. That starter the biggest shitfest I've seen yet.

You want to make airsoft public that way. Go ahead, but make sure you are more than flame proof.

The guy, after all that, kinda went off the face of the earth for many reasons. He quitted airsoft, sold most of his guns and concentrated on playing paintball.

Airsoft + TV = FAIL!

Rukus November 3rd, 2008 11:43

I didn't think the article was badly written. It was an ok read and does explain a little about airsoft.

I don't think it's ready for TV though lol.

What... you mean like on a national news broadcast at prime time?

done it.. YouTube - Global National - Airsoft in Toronto at TTAC3 ( focused on TTAC3 and what we do )

People who are of the ilk that would enjoy this type of activity will find it eventually ... there is no need to advertise...

it is already all over the internet..

The guy in black with the glasses, beard, and ball cap was super distracting with all the hand gestures.

Something a lot simpler would have more impact. Just off the of my head, "Hi Mom it's OK for me to play with guns".

OK you guys, run with it!

i dont get it... i think the video was perfect....even showed some martial arts so we dont look like goons with guns....

L473ncy November 3rd, 2008 18:02

@ arman:
I think that was a joke.

I seemed to get the impression that was Brian with the cap and glasses doing the briefing.

BrickHouse November 3rd, 2008 18:11

I think that video was shit, the instructor and "Martial arts" bullshit are for furfags like Sty....

YES TAKE MY HAND AND TEACH ME GRAND MASTER!, I WANT TO UNDERSTAND VIOLENCE!!!

Death March:

What you shoud be doing--------------> NOTHING!!

Another fail thread like most on ASC

Suck It!

Double Tapper November 3rd, 2008 18:14

It could also give ppl the feeling that we are a para military group instead
of gamers.

mcguyver November 3rd, 2008 18:23

I'll still be available to wear a Speedo, and yell "Allahu Ackbar" throughout the video. That should put everyone's mind at ease that we're not paramilitary, but rather expressing our religious freedom in this country.

Kookamater November 3rd, 2008 18:26

I forget the ones the Brit's did, but it's exactly what I'd want to see. Frankly this one Global did didn't even really educate people as much.

You guys are screaming fail, and I kinda expected thanks to airsoft being in a fragile state/what COULD go wrong. But even I can accept that educating people on what we do is actually a good idea. Maybe not going full blown public with it, but at least telling friends, family, and neighbors what it is.

AvroAero November 3rd, 2008 19:35

This has been done before. And it was a fail.

The idea is an epic fail.

On a side note, having the media try to educate anyone is also a fail. News reporters are like those guys at work that talk a big game to the new guy or anyone without the ability to notice his or her bullshit. They'll sound like they know what their doing, but that's just because you don't have a fucking clue.

What could go wrong? Your still playing aren't you?
