http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e3...normal_PCU.jpg
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e3...beaver/pcu.jpg

so im thinking of building a PCU kit. any tips for some gear

i was planning
PCU lvl5

PANTAC MBSS
front: 4 double M4 pouches, triple 40mm pouch, what else?
back: hydration carrier, radio pouch, small madic pouch

PACA Body armor (real/ hopefully repo)

PANTAC MOLLE belt with suspenders
sarfiland 6004 for USP
double pistol pouch for double stack .45
double M4 pouch
mag dump pouch

IBH helmet
what the hell should i put here? never had a helmet before

also im mostly going to be using pantac for 1 simple reason. im a college student, so keep in mind when giving advice im not made of money so advice is great but i cant afford alot of real gear.

Thank God I was tired of the redneck pmc look.

Andres September 7th, 2008 01:56

I sure do like this style... might invest in some myself.

Beazer September 7th, 2008 01:57

I just bought myself a PCU!!!
Good luck finding them. Especially an MCU.
Talk to me on JOC.

H-G September 7th, 2008 14:19

Second pic is airsofters if you're curious.

Try a belt mounted holster and ditch the IBH too?

Well, your kinda mixing two styles into one with the pics, if that is what you are basing it off of.

First pic is with USAF PJ's and the third is SEALs. Like H-G said, the second is a bunch of airsofters.

I would not have 4 double mags on a MBSS and then another on on the belt kit. Thats too much mags for a MBSS load-out. Don't put a double on the belt and lose one off of the MBSS, move the MBITR pouch to the front for easier access. Medical pouch should also be on the front. If you are running a M203, then you can ether mount them onto the top front of the MBSS or the belt, your choice.

Like H-G said, ditch the IBH... just please don't even bother with one. If you really want something a long the lines of an IBH, you can always get yourself a MICH 2001. For what to put on the helmet, its all up to you. Popular things are NVG mounts, velcros for patches and flags, goggles, strobe's and lights. Really, its up to you to find out what you want.

I think the 6004, the double pistol mag pouches and the dump pouch are fine.

attack-beaver September 7th, 2008 15:03

the mag pouch on the belt is there for a vest ditch for what ever reason. i can still be some what affective in game.

what vest would you recommend if not a MBSS? what if i upgrade to 3 triple mag pouches with the medical pouch and 40mm on the front?

also those pics i posted re bout the only reference pics i was able to find.

Maybe this will help? These are Rangers in Iraq.

attack-beaver September 9th, 2008 03:27

what kind of vests are they using in the above pic?

ex September 9th, 2008 06:43

In the second pic he's wearing an Eagle RRV with an Eagle Rear Plate Carrier and an Eagle MSAP Cumberbund along with the RLCS RRV adapters. Looks like it's all in Ranger Green too. He's definitely wearing a PACA low Vis Soft Armor carrier underneath as well.

The first pic looks like an Eagle RRV with the MLCS back piece, on the left and a Eagle Ciras Land on the right.

Real PCUs are made by ORC Industries and SEKRI. EB also has a knockoff, but I dunno how well it performs (if you plan on actually using it in the wet and cold) and honestly for the price I'd get the real shit.

SEKRI has their own website (sekri.org) and ORC is available from herculeswear.com

I see some on eBay sometimes too, and there's probably other places that carry it.

R.A.T.M._JLD September 9th, 2008 22:40

Blackhawk has MCU.

Dose any one have OD on PCU?

Beazer September 10th, 2008 01:41

ORC lost the contract, and I don't think you can get anything like this aside from ebay now.
and the colour is kinda like the smoke green by Paraclete.

Dunno, Hercules Wear still has ORC stuff in stock (at least according to the website). $45 for a Level 6 hardshell doesn't suck

http://www.hercules-wear.com/product_view.asp?id=16

$97 for a genuine level 5 SF-PCU

http://www.hercules-wear.com/product_view.asp?id=247

Beazer September 10th, 2008 03:47

wow, thought they all sold out cept for the smalls and weird sizings.
Time to invest in the level 6, I've already got the 5.

Yep. Looking at eBay it it looks like the current Level 5 is made by Patagonia with some minor updates to the pattern like the zippered shoulder pockets.

I'm surprised Orc still has some Level 5's in stock. $97 for the jacket is a steal compared to what people are paying on eBay. Clearing out the warehouse I guess. I've already got a set but I like to have 2 of everthing ;)

Andres September 30th, 2008 22:32

Just received some MCU from Huang with ORC on the tag, that mean it's a replica or no... ?

This means that China has got scary about replicating, that's all. Their TAD replica even has the made in USA tag inside and the TAD patch on it.

OK So I saw the Contras team at Flag Raiders on Sunday, most were using this kit, and I must say it looked awesome! PCU tops go very well with ACU Bottoms IMO, looks like ANOTHER kit ill have to start :)
Thanks to the Contra guy that explained what the shirt was to me (Not sure who you are on here). I mistook it for a flight suit jacket.

Wilson October 27th, 2008 20:29

Sekri.org's stuff is surprisingly inexpensive...

Keep in mind, guys, that there's a lot under that wind/water resistant shell that you don't see - its a system of multiple layers that are interchangeable depending on the environment. With that system you can pretty much go from the hot desert to a Northern Ontario winter!

I Watched the video on the blackhawk website, says its part of the ECWCS line, this means its only for wintertime or can be had for everyday use?

Shirley October 28th, 2008 00:27

Damn it, I want a set from Huang!
It's water proof too!

pugs144 October 28th, 2008 00:44

I just got a pair of the ORC PCU pants, and the Blackhawk L5 jacket (since ORC doesn't have Xtra-Meaty size jackets anymore), while a teamate just got both ORC PCU pants and jacket. The Blackhawk jacket is almost identical to the ORC one, so it's not for cold weather use by itself.

Wilson October 28th, 2008 05:51

Like I said, you need to layer. Those "level 5" jackets and pants are merely wind-breaking, water resistant shells. They offer no real insulation at all. Look into a fleece mid-layer and an under-armour cold gear shirt for actual warmth. Couple that all together and you have the makings of an all-weather setup.

SINN October 28th, 2008 15:40

Level 5 is a step up from just wind breaking. Level 4 windshirts are designed for that. Level 5 PCU/MCU actually does breath but also allows a little more warmth. Combine the level 5 with level 3 thermals and you are actually super toasty!

Here is a quick breakdown:

Level-1,Silk Weight boxers, t-shirts, pants and long sleeve shirt
Level-2, Mid weight PowerDry,shirt and pants
Level-3, ThermalPro pullover
Level-4, Windshirt which is windproof.
Level-5, Softshell jacket and pants (wind proof and water resistant)
Level-6, Hardshell Polyurethane coated jacket and pants
Level-7, Insulated jacket pants and vest...but keeps you looking like mr. staypuff

This past weekend, i wore a level 5 PCU top with level 2 and 3 under. I was sweating when it was cold! I brought my level 6 rainjacket, but decided I didnt need it since it doesnt breath and we were running around. The water just beaded off of the PCU just fine.

Jar|-|ead October 28th, 2008 17:54

Yeah wore my pcu on that day too.My inside's was DRY.Well worth the buy.

Godlyspartan October 28th, 2008 17:56

The game on Sunday, my setup was a Under Armour wicking shirt as Base with the BDU as the heat layer and PCU for rain and wind protection.

This combo makes the heat level an acceptable tolerance without heat stroking to death.

Only problem is after years of use my ORC PCU is so old that it has lost its Water resistant capabilities. ghetto got to buy me a new one

Wilson November 13th, 2008 09:24

Is there a name for the colour of those PCU's? Ranger Green? Foliage Green? Sage Green?

I've been rocking the civilian counterpart to the PCU (with my BDU jacket as the top layer where applicable) but I like the look and increased function of the real thing.

FYI from a function perspective, the clones don't hold a candle to the real deal. Like, not even close.

Ghostnote December 21st, 2010 04:56

Necro post

How do I tell if my pcu level 5 pants are genuine or repro? I have been told its real but im looking at it and the quality of the stitching doesn't seem like military grade. Any suggestions?

pugs144 December 21st, 2010 08:53

The 0rc softshells all have wonky stitching as 0rc provides employment to disabled and developmentally challenged people so they don't necessarily use professional seamstresses.

Best way to verify authenticity is the water resistance of the fabric. Refer to militarymoron's PCU Lvl 5 review.

SINN December 21st, 2010 09:26

yeah exactly puggs! Unfortunately it is hard to tell these days what is real and what isn't sometimes. You have to do the old fashioned thing and learn the hard way sometimes...like Morb said:

pugs144 December 21st, 2010 12:53

The fabric the Orc Lvl 5 is made from is silicone encapsulated EPIC fabric. The water resistance should be good for the life of the fabric so if you find your PCU isn't beading water even after a wash/dry cycle, then it's probably a knockoff.

Conker January 29th, 2011 15:17

Hate to tell you mate but the above photos are either level 6 or 7 definatly not 5. 5 is for wind and light precipitation, 7 is for static operations to -40 F, they are also using Outdoor Research Gaitors during hiking operations.

Those photos are from SEALs doing cold weather training on a 28 day course in Alaska.

pugs144 January 30th, 2011 21:56

Non-permeable Lvl 6 during high aerobic output activities? That doesn't make sense.

scottyfox January 30th, 2011 22:07

Looks like 5s to me. Talking to guys at Ft Drum and from my experience backcountry skiing, soft shells are fine in cold and windy so long as you layer with primaloft or fleece etc (or a Lv 3 midlayer). Lv 6 type shells (Arcteryx, PCU or whatever) tend to be overkill nowadays in all but the harshest weather.
It'll be lv 5 for me looking like Stay Puft with lots underneath for me in a couple weeks in Picton.

Stewartb109 January 30th, 2011 22:07

5 doesn't make much sense either though in those conditions. It takes about an hour or so of moderate or light snow exposure and 5 gets soaked. They've got to have on some other goodies under that aside from standard ECWCS (hate most of it, love 5+)

Looking at the hoods though, it does look like it could be 5

pugs144 January 31st, 2011 13:12

Refer to the PCU usage guide. Level 6 is only used for static conditions. In addition, if you read up on the softshell concept you'll see the logic behind it.

Exercising like that in LvL 6 would be like wearing a full body suit camelback bladder full of lukewarm water. It’s almost ridiculous how warm LvL 5 keeps you in low temperatures.

Has anyone else purchased any of the Propper APCU? I have LvL 1, 2 and a LvL 5 jacket on the way – it’s all on clearance now, so somewhat cheaper.

The GEN III ECWCS is really impressive too if you don’t mind a lot of ACU – you usually can find it new in full lvl sets for sale on eBay. I think I would be holding out for some time until a MilSim that calls for LvL 7 tho.

MilanWG January 31st, 2011 16:52

scottyfox February 2nd, 2011 17:55

To tuck or not to tuck? The jacket into the pants that is. Skiing, I would leave a softshell out but my pants have a bib and the 5 jacket seems long enough to beg for it.
Winter application. Orc PCU, Lv 5 with Lv 2. Can't really tell in alot of those pics, what are your guys' thoughts?

lt_poncho February 3rd, 2011 18:20

Tucking it in keeps the snow from running up into the jacket when you are prone or taking cover in snow covered areas. There are no waist drawstrings like the M-65 jackets.

And the LCF index.

I think the name is a little misleading, I thought it was an FR clothing system.

pugs144 March 31st, 2012 10:58

No, it is not. FR components are not part of the PCU system AFAIK.

Acid_Snake March 31st, 2012 11:14

PCU is designed to protect you from the natural elements ie: rain, snow, wind, etc.

The whole FR thing is mostly to protect the soldiers in the humvees who hit an IED. Soliders were seeing burn injuries from having clothes light on fire, the need was recognized for fire resistant clothing as your combat effectiveness is pretty much reduced to zero if you're on fire. As well, if you're already fucked up and cant move at least you won't also be on fire...

Curo March 31st, 2012 12:23

Well also with things like flashbangs or flares older BDUs melted and causing burns.

greenknightscaptain May 12th, 2012 15:32

has anyone used a Dragon Red Airsoft PCU lvl 5 set?...I keep seeing posts from Huang advertising different combat shirts. While browsing the site I came across the PCU set and was curious if the imitation PCU gets the job done? My other option i was considering was a Condor softshell in foliage...which is a better choice if i dont want to spend orc/pantigonia $$$ but still want a quality jacket?

greenknightscaptain May 19th, 2012 13:06

Nevermind guys I made the call and decided on the Condor Softshell.
