How do you practice?

Hey im wondering how do u guys usually practice your shooting, aiming, and tactics?

Like how do you guys usually shoot at home?
Do you set up a mini range in a room where its empty or find some place in your basement?

mcguyver July 9th, 2007 23:31

I take my gun out with a dozen or more other guys and we all get "practice".

Use your gun enough and you will figure out it's quirks and tendancies, as well as it's range, accuracy, bush penetration, etc.

Cassius July 9th, 2007 23:32

It's all up to you as long as you don't take it outside in plain view in your backyard or something.

Did you realize that once you gain experience your nickname will be sort of useless?

Skruface July 10th, 2007 00:26

This is a video of my last team practice:

Lakonian July 10th, 2007 00:30

X targets, spotter calling shot placement.

" Head, left. Chest, right. Ready.... UP!"
shot/shot

*repeat*

Dress up in your full combat uniform.

Start from your basement.

Work your way up.

I do that every single night before I sleep....

Scenario, Communications, Tactics like the center peel this and that. Need something to in between games.

TokyoSeven July 10th, 2007 02:51

I stab myself in the arm with a safety pin.
It helps me practice screaming like a woman, cause thats exactly what I do during any type of airsoft sim or game. Scream like a woman.

BBS July 10th, 2007 02:57

i get into my gear and clear rooms in my house with targets set in each room. i don't have a big yard so i can't train on my own for woodland games.

CanKam July 10th, 2007 09:54

Well first off, just to get in the mood. I shoot BBs at a metal plate in my basement and try to avoid the ricochets as much as possible, just for survival sakes.

Next, just to make sure I can retreat efficiently, I go do naked jumping jacks in someone else's yard then run away to a high grass field to practise my stealth.

When it comes to shooting, one day, I go at a game.... I point my AEG and....shoot.

Then one day, in band camp...

Amazing KG3 July 10th, 2007 10:30

so nobody practices or has pick up games or anything? Dont even meet up? Is it because no one has a field to play on, or is it because you all think its stupid?

If anyone here thinks "clearing" their houses by themselves in full kit is better practice than getting out on the field with a few mates, they're retarded.

Not to mention a little sad.

Here I thought I was bipolar, no wonder I feel so sad recently!

(note the amount of smart asses and sarcastic natures that responded to the thread KG3, the only real way to practice this hobby is obviously playing against fellow airsofters... It's a sport not masterbation)

Amazing KG3 July 10th, 2007 10:50

i do practice with my team. We just dont drive 300k to get to the field and play the rest of the provinces here in the atlantic region. Its the players on our team versus players on our team, that have certain goals in mind (a drill, a dry run, whatever) I consider this practice.

I dont clear my own house by myself though, thats just too much.

Mist3r.B July 10th, 2007 11:08

I pratice long distance shooting (50 meter) on a plain terrain so I can see the effect of the wind on my bbs. Also pratice shooting while moving toward the target. For the gbb I do the same but at 30 meter. I also try to put down and draw the aeg betwen burts so that way your instinctive shooting improve.

HellRanger July 10th, 2007 11:14

Average pitol engagement distance in real combat is 7-10 meters.

I live out in the country, so I practice in my back yard. I either plink, target shoot or pound squirrels :). I also took spray paint and marked the side of our cement so that I have a 10 yd. mark, 20 yd. mark, and a 25 yd. mark.

hmm. thats a really good way of training your reflexes. eye protection is a must.

CDN_Stalker July 10th, 2007 18:39

When I feel like it, I'll do either quick draw from my drop leg, unsnap, draw while moving towards one of my posts in the basement (acts like either a tree or a corner from cover) and double tap an alumimum oven sheet 20ft away (insticitve shooting, front sight about 16" from my eyes, same as I always shoot my Glocks), from both left and right side of the post, then reholster; or I'll do transition drills, I'll burst the plate with one of my MP5s, move to the pole while drawing my sidearm, double tap it from cover, both sides, reholster then do the same with a burst from my MP5 from behind cover. I might do a few cycles of either, and spend 10-20 mins for repetition sake. And I do it like I need to, fast. Now that I have a KSC Mk23, I have to relearn it all with a new system! Luckily my G19 will always be my sidearm, Mk23 is more a special purpose gun.

Aside from that, I get enough practice from playing.

I play counter strike, I find the tactics and immersion very similar to real world situations. Ussally i try to microwave and eat pizza pops right from my game chair if I get up an leave my fat as jiggles and my carpal-tunnel flares up.

Blackthorne July 11th, 2007 12:26

Dry fire and playing dress up in you house may seem ghey, but it's very often encouraged, especially in the Real Steel world where your training level may determine if you live or die..LOL

They say train like you fight. So getting all your shit on and just drawing a few times can be a real eye opener. I don't know how many times I have seen guys try to get out the old secondary under a little pressure and COMPLETELY fuck it up (myself included). Just recently I had to move a whole bunch of shit around on my main rig (and get some of it off on a subload) because what looked good just didn't work. I couldn't draw/holster my pistol without hooking on my med kit, and having to look away from the X to get it in. The ONLY way I figured that out was DOING IT.

Add a little adrenaline, and you hands turn into flippers. Your fingers just don't work. So, if you are POSITIVE you can get that nice new 1911 out of that brand new Safariland 6004 you bought last week without any practice at all, more power to you.

But I bet there is pownage in your future.. :D

Getting geared up is the key, but going full out in BDUs, helmet, fake riot cuffs and such is overkill. Hehe, ya, I've worn my chest rig around at home (holds about 6 beer) and wear it when arranging my gear, seeing best way to arrange MP5 and M24 slings at the same time, etc. And wearing the stuff during transistion drills in the basement because things always get in the way and it's best to work out the bugs first.

So does mine. I wore it at Hallowe'en and used it to store a 6 pack and randomly go up to people and say "hey, want a beer?" and then just give them one then and there. Was working perfect until I put my open one in there (instead of putting it down on a table) but then proceeded to FORGET it was there. Then, I went to pick something up from the ground....not so great.

i practice target aquisition...
place targets at different ranges, hide behind cover...
do quick one shots: hide, expose, aim, fire, hide in one smooth motion. i repeat this until i get faster with every round.
ofcourse i do this with my mask on, with an RDS mounted on the gun.

HellRanger July 13th, 2007 09:37

the reason why i practice this is because i sometimes find myself hesitating and sort of semi-panic when i spot a tango. a few times i've fumbled with my gun trying to my best to aim only to miss and get spotted giving the tango time to take cover.
i realized i was taking too much time aiming. so i made it a point to practice quick aiming and shooting.
the drill honestly improved my game a lot. nowadays it seems that IF and when i spot a tango first within range i manage to pick him off most of the time compared to very seldom before the drills. :) my RDS helps(both eyes open ofcourse), i don't know if i can do this without it.

what i do is i place targets at different distances beyond a corner. i take cover behind the corner a distance away. i practice running to the corner, taking cover for a second, then i peek while drawing my gun AND aiming with the intent to break off a single shot. Idealy as soon as the gun is level you should have already acquired a target and have the RED DOT on it, ONCE the red dot is on target break off a shot immediately.
i do 2 variations, gun drawn from below ready position, you know, gun pointing down, and one drawn from above, like when the gun is beside your face when taking cover in corners. BIG DIFFERENCE with both. drawn from below takes more time because the muzzle travels a longer sweep upwards but DOESN'T obstruct your view when you break cover, meaning you have more time to survey(quickly ofcourse, less than a second idealy) the target zone. Plus, it's easier to place the RED DOT where you intend it to, again idealy as you end the upward travel of the muzzle as you aim. remember that all this happens in one smooth motion, shouldn't take more than a second or two. I find this works better for me.
Drawn from above, near the face, is a lot faster, but there is a split second where the gun can and will obstruct your view, so this is riskier overall for me.
others who have mastered their guns may find this easier.
forgot to mention, i just shoot one target at a time per "breaking cover", at first. when i get that down perfect i try shooting all targets within an absurdly/unreasonable short amount of time (to add pressure) :) just for fun. just use your internal judgment clock. haha

(((There is also such a thing called muscle memory, the more you practice drawing your gun and aiming repeatedly, using basically the same stance (with respect to your head, arm and shoulder position, basically what you use to shoulder/aim your weapon) the more you become faster, because your muscles REMEMBER that pose. Not the exact pose but close to it.)))

this may sound more compliacted than it really is, its just an explanation, actual practice is better and more fun. oh yeah, the reason why i run to the corner is so that my body position varies, therefore kind of making me forget where the targets are to a degree. making it a little more difficult, since i can easily pick off targets with one stroke in less than a second if i stay in the corner long enough. well its a good idea to change things around so you learn to adapt.

i've read there are a lot who swear by iron sights, i'm not one of them, i guess i'm not that good.:) i need my RDS, its just so much quicker, making me more accurate.

Note: this drill does not in any way simulate actual field conditions. coz in the drill you know there are targets beyond the corner, and you know where they are. The drill just develops quick aiming and shooting. once mastered you'll find that your game will change, missing will no longer be that big of an issue. The game will really be who sees who first, which has been what the game really is about.

hope this helps, it helped me a lot. :)
