Keep your mags in your pistol!
 

Ok, I figure I might as well offer you a solution that I foud works well. Jackals (Chef) lost a Glock mag last weekend, and at Op: Knights back in May my G19 mag fell out without my knowing (was in my CF issue shoulder holster, I figure it wasn't latched properly) and luckily I found it later.

I searched for a solution and came up with no really decent looking/working ones, then fell upon my solution by accident. I bought a few different sizes of bicycle innertube to use for various airsoft related things and planned to put a section on both my G19s as well for better grip. I roughly measured the length needed (I think the size I used was 14" x 1 3/4" or somewhere around there), added another 1/2" or so that I figured I'd trim off. Anyways, I rolled it on and found the excess overhanging the mag well, then it occured to me that I might be able to use that to hold the mag in. Lo & behold, it works perfectly! To change the mag, simply pull the flap off the mag onto the grip and dump the mag, slap another home then pull the flap well over the end of the mag (at the front if you need to know). If you plan to be using your pistol a fair bit and need mag changes more frequently, keep the flap pulled up over the grip and you can change mags the same as if it wasn't there.

It looks good, makes for a great grip when shooting, and holds the mag in place when you carry it around in whatever holster you use. Beats using tape to hold it in. I'll get pics later if people need.

What make of glock? Is the mag release plastic? Does this happen often?

All of my WA pistols have a metal mag release assembly that contacts a metal notch in the mag, so I've never had this problem. Is the mag release assembly or the mag body plastic in your piece?

Stock KSC Glock mag catches are plastic.

try to keep sand out of it as it would be pushed up against the tip of your mag and abrade it unduly.

You know Illusion, too often when I was writing the thread I had to prevent myself from using the word "Foreskin". It took all I could to not type it. Thanks for making me laugh!

And ya Treadstone, it's a plastic mag catch same material as the heavy weight frame is made out of. Never had any mags slip out of it before, just the once and so I think I just didn't seat it far enough.

Anyways, it's primarily for when the chances of using it or changing mags is there, but not likely. Then again, my MP5 tends to get hit more times than I do, so I gotta deal with resorting to backup weapons. I tend to travel pretty light compared to certain people on my team, so I can go to my M24 sniper rifle, M11A1, one of my two G19s....... lol, nah, the lightest I go is MP5 and G19, if the mission calls for long range or 'surgical shots' I'll lug my M24 along slung on my back. Super useful it it, can't wait til I get my M700 sorted out enough to trust to be consistant.

I can imagine this working very well for a single-mag backup GBB... but for people who have 3-4 mags per handguns... this can be kind of a problem.

Actually it's no problem at all if you read my first post. Is why I showed both my G19s, one with it in carry mode, the other in full time GBB useage/reloading mode. If you think about it, it's 100% a non-issue. If you carry it your mag is secure. If you actually USE it after something happens to your primary, in this case you have 20 rounds to deal with things. If you MAKE it to actually having to change mags, peel back the rubber and change your mag, then leave the rubber in place as shown on the lower G19. It stays there until you move it. If you plan to play a pistols only game or CQB, leave it like that as well.

See what I mean, it works both ways and is 100% fool proof. Set it as you feel you'll need it!!! Add to that it makes the feel of the gun greatly improve as well.................. ;)

I have never lost a mag yet, simply because the mags are so dam heavy, you hear them drop.

I think I'll try this too. I've had problems recently with my WA Wilson CQB ( 45 single stack). When using either a TT Shingle or the TT Modular holster to hold the pistol, it seems to hit the mag release somehow. I haven't lost a mag yet, but I've come damn close a few times, IE drawn the pistol and watched the mag fall out.

For those who say this slows you down, it slows you down less than drawing your secondary only to find that the damn mag has disappeared, or falls out on the draw!

A metal mag catch upgrade to KSC glocks just about gets rid of lost mags, I found. They won't slip out, but potentially you could still ding the mag release if your holster doesn't fit it properly, and the metal mag catch will slowly wear the mags down (depends how much you like to change mags).

My mag catches aren't wore down, I never had or have had the experience before and even try once in a while to pull the mag out to no avail. Was just a case of my not fully engaging the mag into the gun. And since it was in my shoulder holster (is a single piece of cordura with no stiffeners, and it's not likely my arm pushed the gun into my ribs and hit the mag catch....... tried it, can't do it). Even still, the main thing about this is to give the gun a very good grip (and looks pretty tacticly cool), but going one step further and giving the extra bit of security for your $70 mag................... I never meant it as a cheap way to fix a worn mag release problem, just as reliable security.

Yeah, it's not that the plastic ones wear down, it's just that they blow.
The metal ones grip much better, but they do slowly wear down the mag catch on the mag itself (metal grinding on metal). They fixed my lost mags problem permanently, but eventually (could be years...) they may wear down the mag itself.

Not saying I doubt you John, just clarifying that it's not my problem right now, and even if I went with metal mag catches, I'd still keep the rubber on my grips as added security. Post wasn't made to fix worn mag catches, it was made for *said* reasons.

As an aside, how much to replacement metal catches cost? If I was interested I'd look, but I'm not interested, considering my G19s get little use as it is.
