Comparison of ration packs

The NY Times has an interactive article on 15 nation's military rations;

Crunchmeister September 7th, 2010 11:50

Anyone else find it ironic that the article name is "A taste of home..." and the first item on the British menu is lamb curry?

TechSeller September 7th, 2010 11:55

Very interesting. If I'm from Sweden/Norway you can bet I am trying to swap out for another one lol

Relja September 7th, 2010 11:57

Yay to Germany and its use of Serbian food :) Cevapi nom nom nom

Crunchmeister September 7th, 2010 12:06

The German one does look yummy.

Grudge September 7th, 2010 12:08

Pound cake - for less bathroom breaks! LOL

Just as bad for the Canadian one, "Swiss Steak"! I mean c'mon they're not even part of NATO they're neutral!

Curry is actually a very big thing in England.
A brief history lesson would tell you why :D.

Cheesevillage September 7th, 2010 14:49

The Canadian one actually seems like it would be pretty good.

That and Germany.

Crunchmeister September 7th, 2010 14:59

Personally I think our Canadian rations are quite good. Back in my days of army cadets in the 80s, I thought they were quite good. And the ones I've had in recent years have all been quite tasty too. I'd have no problem eating them for extended periods.

coach September 7th, 2010 15:05

I ate the Canadian ones all weekend at OP: Last Call and they have been quite good. Jeroon's going to hate me but I think the spaghetti and meatballs have been the best so far.

mr_nuts31 September 7th, 2010 19:00

too bad they don't show the french army rations, they get a tetra pack of wine in every meal

Kokanee September 7th, 2010 19:15

A note, the Brit ration is only showing one portion of the entire package; it comes as a "1 day" ration, with tons of biscuits and extras. Because of this you can mix everything up and get a little more creative than with a ration that is just for one meal. I absolutely loved trying out Brit rations overseas and they are great, but really it's all good, it's food.

Bandit September 7th, 2010 20:03

British rations look the best to me. Curry and a little bottle of Tabasco? Sold.

-Skeletor- September 7th, 2010 20:40

Canadian ones are pretty good, not a fan of all of them. I ate them for half my tour.. after awhile they become very blah.. Was a good week when we found a box of US MREs to eat, new food and they were pretty good. Jalapeno/Cheese spread is the shit, same with the pound cake.

The South Korean ration looks pretty small, dunno how filling it would be especially if you are pretty physically active.

The Brits invented curry bro. Curry is a spice and nothing more in India.

MadMax September 7th, 2010 20:50

Curry powder is a British "invention". Proper Indian curry is blended and cooked from individual ingredients like cumin and tumeric proportioned to for the recipe.

I have to admit I was surprised to find the Canadian teriyaki salmon dinner ration to be really good! The salmon on it's own was pretty decent, but the sauce really makes a delicious meal.

CDN_Stalker September 8th, 2010 18:44

Funny observation, I have lots of CF IMPs all sectioned out into the various groups for the little packets, condiments, etc. and was looking through one bag for a few packs of the instant coffee (yes, it's crap, but I can stomach it) since our work coffee maker has gone tits up....... didn't find any in there, but found sugar packets, and guess what? The sugar packets are measured in GRAINS!!! A whole 100 grains worth to be exact!

Lol, I found that funny, simply because that is a common measurement for powder weight in ammunition, but never thought I'd see it on something like a packet of sugar. And it looks like regular packets of sugar one finds at convienent stores, diners, etc.

Back at ColtFarmers big August Holiday game back at OLD Flagraiders, Myself, Bindon Blood and Brit_ter had MREs for lunch which consisted of Pasta, cookie/bread, cinnamon apple slices. The cinnamon was VERY strong. I ate the entire thing........and then didnt move a whole lot for the 2nd half of the game, haha.

Mitchell12 September 8th, 2010 23:08

I find MRE's great for my long 4+ day hikes where we carry our own food and everything. They are a great morale boost when you feel like giving up because you are cold wet and hungry. Not to mention that they really give you those much needed calories to drag yourself across the Newfoundland scenery for another day.

Coma September 8th, 2010 23:26

Those little Do Not Eat loaves of bread in the CF rations still haunt my memories from cadet days...

Ozone06 September 8th, 2010 23:55

Is it me or does the Austrailian one look like there's a shit tonne in there? I'm thinking the list is all the different MRE's?

current day bread loaves aren't all that bad. soft and with a little honey, they are pretty good. so you can sort of call it fresh...

AngelusNex September 9th, 2010 08:49

Actually, I had the opportunity to try one of the South Korean rations over the summer while visiting a forward operating base just off the DMZ.... its NOT small.... the picture only shows a portion of the food.

I like Korean food, but damn... lets just say that I've had better.
