Propane @ Costco
Went to Costco in Red Deer today and they had a 4 pack of propane cylinders (the standard Coleman sized one we usually use for the GGB's) for $13 and change. Don't remember the brand though. Check your local Costco's for actual pricing as I know they vary a lot geographically.

Price of 2 bottles for 4! Nice!!
|
My local Wally World sells them for 4 bucks a pop, 6 for a pair. Maybe they were on sale, as I bought 8 at once and this was a year and a half ago, still working on my third can lol
|
I'm still on my original 6 packs that date to the year greengas was discovered to be propane.
Do you guys sniff it? :D |
We went through 2 canisters last week after setting up a bam airsoft type course. Its so much fun we are all wanting to build race guns. I have a feeling I'll need a cheap source of propane. On that note I bought some in a blue canister from LOWES and that sh*t stinks bad. Way worse than the Coleman I have been using. You guys find some brands smell alot worse than others?
|
Yep. Propane by itself is colourless and odourless. The company is the one that adds the "bitterants" to the propane as a safety feature to stop people from sniffing it and so you know if there's a leak. I'm not sure if the amount is regulated though but yeah if one smells worse than another then it's probably because there's more stuff in it.
PS: If you want really cheap propane, I've heard of adaptors for those large 20lb propane tanks that you attach the coleman canisters to and they'll fill it back up. I'll see if I can find a link for you. EDIT: Here's a video showing you how to. It sounds like they're called propane couplers or something. I'm also not sure if this is entirely safe (since it's an "uncontrolled fill") but it can't be any less safe than filling GBB mags. I mean we do it on a smaller scale with GBB mags so why not (right?). The coupler is about $20-30 so although it's a big investment it will pay off in time if you use lots of gas. He does it himself with the BBQ tanks, and a coupler.

would it be possible to make a bracket up so the a full size tank sits upside down in it than attatch a fill nozzle to a hose? be a great source for a team fill station. expecially if you had like 3 coming off it at once.... might make the propane cool way too much though.

I've seen pictures of full size tanks rigged for re-fills and hanging upside down in the bush.
What you'd really want is a seconary port so you could charge it with silicon, maybe Mad Max will get on it. More GBB rifles and SMGs will mean more call for this. |
If you take good care of your mags they won't immediately explode/go bad if you don't oil them for a game or two.
Hell I hardly oil my TM mags at all, and they're still fine. |
Walmart has really good prices too. I got 2 tanks of Coleman for about $8

I have a long hose that is also a 20lb to disposable tank adapter but it's too long and doubt the propane would stay in liquid form for too long as it will likely vaporize well before reaching the mag being filled. Speculation: Any length of hose wouldn't be able to contain liquid propane and prevent it from vaporizing. I'm thinking it'd introduce too much heat causing it to go from liquid to gas faster. |
propane propane ^_^

RE: using larger refillable propane tanks:
Cdn Tire (and other places, I'm sure) sell a small brass adapter that connects to a refillable tank. The other end has the same connector as is on top of a disposable tank. Take one of these (buy the double outlet one, it costs the same as a single, and gives the nozzle better orientation) and connect a metal or AI fill adapter. With the tank sitting on the ground, the nozzle points straight up. Pick the tank up, turn it over, and you have the world's biggest fill can! i recommend using a 5 or 7 lb tank, as one of those can be handled by a single person. OTOH, if you want to establish a filling station for a two hundred person team all using GBBR's and you have access to a crane, go with a 100 lb tank... ;-> I used the above setup for the past two years with a 7 lb tank. Works like a dream, gives great fills. Not really portable like a can of green gas though. Solved the problem with one of those cylinder re-fill rigs... looks like it will work well. Why work so hard for cheap propane? Well, for one thing I like gas guns. For another thing, I HAVE worked out a way to load silicone oil into an empty re-fillable tank, so I actually have 7 lb of green gas, not just propane. Note on safety systems in propane tanks: it seems that they will vent liquid if fully inverted: at least my 7lb will, and it's only 2 yrs old. IIRC, it will not vent anything if it's laying on it's side. I also have a tank on our tent trailer that will not vent anything at all unless it has a coupler hooked up to it. |
